A solid practical level bicycle can be bought at a major sports store or road biking shop. There you should find complete bicycles for purchase, that probably have an alloy frame or a combination of more inexpensive components. These practical bikes will ride relatively well but they will not be very light and portable. To find a bike on the higher end of the entry level, you could start with a nice alloy frame and carbon fork, then with what funds you have left, decide upon your seat, handlebars, tires and wheel rims. When you get up into a middle range level of bicycles, you can still get them as a complete model in a cycling shop or sporting goods store. But it might be more fun to choose your individual components to go with your frame. You will first start with a good quality frame, possibly alloy with carbon forks. You can then choose from stronger alloy seat pins, tires, handle bars and stem and a comfortable saddle. If you are privileged enough to be in a situation to choose the best bike you can afford, you can get into several of the best road bike accessories and components from manufacturers such as Campagnolo, Shimano and Mavic. You can pick up terrific wheels, deep carbon rims or the top alloy rims and high pressure tires. Your handle bars, seat pin and stem could be either alloy or carbon. Since your frame is the heart of your bike and you will need a decent one, a great alloy model with carbon forks and maybe a carbon rear triangle might be what you buy. You may be able to buy an all-carbon frame if you can find the funds for it. A quality road bike will make your cycling less demanding and more pleasant, so get the best bike you can afford.
